Yousef Al Otaiba Visits Cleveland Clinic & Participates in Community Discussions

Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE Ambassador to the US made a visit to Cleveland in June. He participated in a variety of community events. He visited the Glenville Community Soccer Field, but he also had important meetings with Cleveland Clinic representatives and participated in a forum dealing with Ohio-UAE relations.

After discussing plans with Cleveland businessmen, Yousef Al Otaiba spoke with Tomislav Mihaljevic, the CEO of Cleveland Clinic. The UAE has a long-standing relationship with the people of Cleveland. In fact, in 2017 the USA Embassy teamed up with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation to build a sporting field for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

“[Soccer] continues to be something that brings us all together,” Ambassador Al Otaiba said. He continued to express his gratitude for having the opportunity to help the community in the way he has. In total, with the help from local communities, the UAE Embassy has helped create ten soccer fields in the United States.

Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba’s intentions aren’t purely to benefit Cleveland. He is also building this relationship to help the citizens of his own country. Hundreds of UAE citizens are treated every year at the Cleveland Clinic. He intends to learn from Cleveland’s expert healthcare and expand the healthcare system of his own country.

In 2015, a branch of the Cleveland Clinic was opened in Abu Dhabi to treat patients locally. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has 360 beds and treats around 400,000 patients every year.

Yousef Al Otaiba has been the UAE Ambassador to the US since 2008. Prior to working in this position, he served as a non-resident ambassador to Mexico. Along with his wife, he has founded a luxury fashion company. His family has a history in politics. In fact, his father was the first Minister of Petroleum in the UAE.

Supporting Children’s National: Abeer & Yousef Al Otaiba

The United Arab Emirates has a long history of sending its children to Children’s National Hospital for treatment. In 2009, the government gifted the hospital with a $150 million donation. Part of the gift went into building the Sheik Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. At the time of the gift, the UAE’s Ambassador to the United States, Yousef Al Otaiba said that donation would lead to innovations in pediatric surgery.

A Personal Connection
Four years later, Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and his wife Abeer would depend on that innovation to help their daughter. In late 2012, the Al Otaibas learned that their second child would be born with a malformation on her lungs that would require surgery. After her birth in 2013, Samia Al Otaiba underwent a successful surgical procedure to remove the malformation. Of the emotional and heart-wrenching experience, Ambassador Al Otaiba said:

“You learn that there are certain things you just can’t control. There’s a lesson in humility about what you can and cannot do, but it also creates bonds like this that you can’t replace.”

Treatment for All
That same year, the Al Otaibas co-chaired the Children’s National Foundation Ball. Since then they have become more involved with the fundraising efforts for Children’s National. The hospital was there for them and their daughter when they needed it. So the Al Otaibas want to ensure that Children’s will be available to everyone in the Washington D.C. community if they needed it too. The hospital serves every family regardless of their ability to pay, making fundraising efforts critical.

Children from the United Arab Emirates also travel to Children’s National for treatment. When they do, the children and their families will not only receive world-class medical treatment but also treatment designed to help families get through a difficult time.

Since becoming involved with fundraising efforts for Children’s National, the Al Otaibas have raised millions of dollars for the hospital. The funds go into helping develop medical innovations and fund crucial medical research that will continue to help children. Other officials who represent the government of the UAE have also joined the Al Otaibas by donating funds to support the hospital and the work it continues to do.

Abeer and Yousef Al Otaiba observe the work of Children’s National Medical Center daily. Their daughter Samia is living a normal life thanks to the dedication and innovations of Children’s National.

GPOs are not the Cause of Drug Shortages

There are a few reasons why there may be drug shortages, but it has been found that GPOs are not one of them. This fact has been supported by the manufacturers such as Sagent and Hospira.

Drug shortage has been found to be caused by issues such as barriers to entry, manufacturing, and other disruptions. GPOs are doing all that they can to reduce these drug shortages and not the cause of the shortages.

GPO contracts are strictly voluntary and are the result of negotiations between certain parties. Hospitals, for example, are able to purchase off contract and do quite often. Contracts are subject to cancellation and pricing can be adjusted. Manufacturers are also able to adjust pricing as they see fit.

GPOs have no control over manufacturers and are not able to force manufacturers into entering contracts. GPOS work with manufacturers, distributors, and hospitals to ensure that a safe and steady supply of products is available for healthcare providers.

It has also been found that GPOs are responsible for delivering billions in cost savings each year to the healthcare system. They also deliver the best products available at the best possible value available to their hospital, healthcare, and long-term care providers.

Hospitals utilize GPOs to effectively group their purchasing power. GPOs do not sell, compound, manufacture, or take title to any drugs that are considered to be in shortage. They have a strong incentive to make sure that their patients are looked after and are able to get their needed medications when they need them. Without a product, GPOs are simply no longer needed.

After extensive research, it has been found by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that GPOs are not the cause of any of the drug shortages but rather the shortages are caused by other factors.

The Difference Made By Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley And SourceAmerica

Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley is an organization providing training and employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities. This is often through federal contract sites and individuals are given the chance to become a part of the workforce. The organization has activities designed to gather donations to assist those in need. One of their competitions is called the Drive to Victory and is a battle between two communities. Each community tries to collect the most donations including clothing, computers, and household items. The donations are tax deductible and the donors are given receipts for their generosity. Arby’s has become the partner for the Goodwill Drive to Victory this year and they are giving coupons for anyone donating. This will benefit Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley in addition to the local high school.

Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley offers numerous programs for individuals with disabilities including a program for adult day care, personal care for homemakers, non-medical transportation services, and vocational habilitation. They receive a lot of support from the volunteers in the community as mentors interested in improving an individual’s quality of life and assisting with their disability. The Goodwill Auto Auction accepts donations of old vehicles and the proceeds help fund over forty services and programs offered by Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley and provides an excellent tax deduction.

Source America established the Ideas to Work Fund and Grant Program in 2011. Nonprofit agencies are given matching grant funds so more jobs can be created for individuals with significant disabilities. They have given funding to thirty nonprofits throughout the county resulting in the creation of 1,300 jobs. The program includes an electronic recycling program, two nonprofit consortiums, a franchise opportunity, a distribution services program, a healthcare and elder food services program, contract manufacturing, and paid internship programs.

Source America formed a partnership with Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley in 2014 a help provide support to veterans. Prior to this, the organizations in Miami Valley offering services to Veterans were not aware of what was being provided by the other organizations. Any collaboration or coordination was almost nonexistent and any value for veterans was not being capitalized. The partnership changed this resulting in more services for veterans capable of changing lives. The perfect example is the gentleman who was hired by Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley as an assistant computer technician. His performance was so outstanding he received an award for customer service through the business division of Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley.

Healthcare. Whose Responsibility Is It?

It will be a long time before we get settled in to what the role of the consumer and the role of the government will be. Right now there is a debate going on whether to leave Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, repeal it or replace it. This complicated issue may take several years to be resolved.

Before we can fix or come to a conclusion on what to do the ultimate questions starts by who is fundamentally responsible for healthcare. Is it the individual or are the shared responsibilities of all Americans? Is it government’s role to step in and play an important role in dictating that healthcare is capped and everyone pays into the system regardless of an individual’s income. Frank Garrison aims to answer these questions in a recent Tennessean article.

The issue with this is that it would be similar to playing the lottery. It would greatly benefit some and potentially hurt others. The factors that would take into account are pre-existing conditions and personal income and wealth.

Any fix without the government would be very difficult as well and possibly further complicate the situation as well. Should there be a shared risk in your healthcare or should it be that each man, or woman, would be responsible for their own health risks? These are some of the issues depending on which side of the fence you are on.

Some, who don’t want to have Obamacare changed, have concluded that the conservative option when referencing the “free market” or “freedom” is merely baiting to distract from the question of shared healthcare. Is healthcare a fundamental right or isn’t it? These are big pieces of the decision when deciding what you want to support.

Sometimes you need to step back and take a view of the entire picture and decide how it lines up with your personal views that you carry. Don’t be afraid to be truthful if you are on another side of the issue than you have originally believed.

Some of the biggest obstacles that the consumers are faced are pre-existing conditions. If there is any lapse in insurance or you switch insurance companies most private companies won’t accept them. Those that do tend to be extremely expensive as well, which unfortunately can be very difficult if someone doesn’t have the money to shell out.

The opposite side of the coin goes back to the individual that is very healthy. If it is grouped as a combined responsibility, is it fair that they should have to pay just as much into a system where someone else, who has a pre-existing condition, pays just the same amount?

The best option is to review your personal values and beliefs, step back and decide which one best aligns with what you believe in your personal morals and what you think is government’s role in the entire debate.

Advance as a Consultant by Taking a Look at Yourself

While there was a time when many businesses only brought in a consultant when they were looking to expand to new operations or were facing some kind of crisis, now consultants are valued as some of the most important members of any staff. In this ever-changing technological world, the expertise of consultants is more prized than ever. It should come as no surprise, then, that more and more young professionals are considering a career in consulting.

Regardless of their experience, the one question that everyone has when they are trying to become a valued consultant is “How do you truly advance your career in this field?” Learning systems such as the renowned Associate Talent CAPCO program are a fantastic option for post-graduates looking to expand their financial consultation skill set and further their personal growth, but even excellent programs such as that must eventually end with the individual entering the business world where they must find a way to constantly advance their careers and themselves.

The very first thing that every consultant who wishes to get ahead needs to know is that the best consultants are never the ones that exhibit superiority. Though you may be hired for your knowledge, it is important that you develop a reputation for yourself as a team player that is able to integrate themselves into any environment and immediately contribute.

That being said, you also don’t want to become a generic individual that just fades into the background. As important as it is not to rock the boat as a consultant, that doesn’t mean that you can’t use your knowledge to really insert yourself into a situation and let everyone you work with know that you really are an expert. The key here is to make sure that you always present yourself as being open to communication and enjoyable to work with on a personal level, but you must avoid the desire to take control of every project.

Once you’ve built a rock-solid personal reputation, the next thing you will need to realize is that it is the nature of your position to bounce around between organizations. As such, it is vital to make sure you do tie your own success to the success of an individual business as much as possible and rather that you find opportunities that allow you to replicate that success at multiple places.

It may not be easy to advance within the consulting world, but you’ll find that the effort will most certainly pay off in this highly rewarding field.

FDA Bans Dangerous Trans Fats in 2018

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a ban on synthetically produced trans fats. The process of hydrogenation is used in the production of these fats that are now labeled dangerous. The FDA has given food manufacturers three years to find substitutes for these now dangerous food products, as advised under former FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

For decades many people considered all fats as dangerous and their consumption would add pounds to the body and damage to the internal organs. Vegetarians who consumed dairy and egg products received limited fat intake, while Vegans only received healthy fats from vegetables. While many advocates of vegetarianism were popular during the second half of the 20th Century, the doctors and the AMA stood opposed. One doctor, Dr. Atkins revolutionized diet programs with his heavy in fat and zero carbohydrate diet, which became popular. Proponents were proving the good effects of the diet. But most on the diet regained much if not all the weight that they had lost while dieting when they stopped the diet.

Another dietary system has proven to be effective, that advocating organic fruits and vegetable and not using any of the packaged food products popular today. These proponents had it right by avoiding the now dangerous hydrogenated trans fats used to give packaged foods a longer shelf life.

Americans are dangerously overweight. Some risk early death, dementia, heart disease and stroke. It is a common concept held by many consumers that whatever is produced in food factories here in America is not dangerous, but the FDA actions have proven this attitude as dangerous to a person’s mindset and to their overall health as well. The latest and perhaps best method of eating correctly and healthily is to use only organically grown fruits and vegetables, limit milk and meat and avoid all packaged food products. This diet has now been proven valid by the findings of the Food and Drug Administration.

Scientists Will Announce “Doomsday Clock” Time

Scientists behind a “Doomsday Clock” that measures the likelihood of a global cataclysm are set to announce Tuesday whether civilization is any closer or farther from disaster.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is expected to unveil the minute hand on the metaphorical clock in Washington, D.C. The clock reflects how vulnerable the world is to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, climate change and new technologies, according to the bulletin.

California Gov. Jerry Brown will join former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry for a discussion at Stanford University after the unveiling.

The scientists behind the bulletin adjusted the clock from five minutes-to-midnight to three minutes-to-midnight last year, citing climate change, modernization of nuclear weapons and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals as “extraordinary and undeniable threats to the continued existence of humanity.”

The minute hand is assessed each year. It has also previously stayed the same and been adjusted in the opposite direction. Most recently in 2010, bulletin scientists cited nuclear talks between the U.S. and Russia and agreement to limit a rise in global temperature for a change from five minutes-to-midnight to six minutes-to-midnight.
