The War on Sugar

Imagine taking something that is good and then adding all sorts of chemicals to it and turning it virtually into a poison. Well, it is done all over the world and the product is what people call sugar. Sugar? They may ask. After all, sugar is something everyone is exposed to on a daily basis. How could it be poisonous? To answer that properly, all of the ingredients that go into the making of sugar needs to be examined. The average sugar cube first started its life as cane juice. Sugar cane juice is actually an amazing product from a nutritional point of view. It’s got wonderful nutrients such as iron, potassium, and calcium.
Next, as the cane juice gets processed to make white sugar, it needs to go through a chemical process. This is when things get dirty. The chemicals used to make white sugar contain phosphoric acid, calcium hydroxide, sulfur dioxide, calcium phosphate, bleachers, defoamers, flocculants etc. All of these chemicals is what makes the humble cane juice into something everyone should think twice before putting it in their body. What exactly are the harmful side effects of sugar? The following are some of the more dangerous ones.
• Cancer cells are known to feed on sugar. The most common cancers encouraged by sugar are prostate, ovarian, pancreatic, breast, and gallbladder.
• One of the biggest causes of obesity is sugar, which in turn causes a whole host of diseases
• Sugar is linked to ADD, anxiety and high levels of adrenaline, especially in children.
• Deficiencies in certain nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, copper and chromium are linked to sugar.
• Premature aging, higher levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can be caused by sugar
• Some of the most obvious side effects of eating sugar are tooth decay and gingivitis.

These are good reasons why no self-respecting health food store will sell sugar. A recent Freakonomics podcast featuring Margaret Hamburg takes a deeper look into the issue. But it gets worse, and there are two reasons for this. First, even before the sugar cane is harvested, it is doused with all sorts of pesticides and chemicals. Then as a final act of environmental irresponsibility the sugar cane fields are burned to get rid of the long leaves! This is done to make harvesting easier. The second part of this story is that people buy light brown or dark brown sugar thinking it is healthier. The sad truth here is that these two products are basically white sugar with a little bit of molasses added to it!
